Why can't I open attached file (e.g. a MS Word document) after clicking the attachment's link of the email in WebMail 2.0?
It may be because the "Automatic prompting for file downloads" option is disabled in the security settings of your Internet web browser. In addition, the Pop-up Blocker of your web browser may cause the problem as well.
This situation usually happens when you are accessing WebMail 2.0 outside the campus network, and your Internet web browser classifies the WebMail 2.0 server as a web site in "Internet" zone.
The problem can be solved by one of the following approaches depending on whether you use WebMail 2.0 on an off-campus public terminal or on your home PC/notebook:
1. 1. The first approach is suitable for users using public terminals and it is not convenient or possible for the users to set the browser security. In such case, you can right click the mouse at the attachment link and select "Open" or “Open in New Window” to open the file in a separate browser window.
For security, you should avoid using public terminals for accessing email and other systems as much as possible to avoid the risk of exposing personal or sensitive information. In case it is necessary to access email from public terminals, you should avoid downloading/saving attachment to the local disk of the computer, and always remember to close all browser windows after use and press the reset button if provided.
2. 2. The second approach is suitable for users using a notebook or a PC at home, to access the WebMail 2.0 most of the time among other Internet access. Users may add the “mail.cityu.edu.hk” to the “Local Intranet” zone of your Internet Explorer browser by the steps below:
If the above is done successfully, all email attachments on “mail.cityu.edu.hk” can be subsequently open by WebMail 2.0 without the foregoing problem.
