General Email Services: Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do when I receive spam?

Please avoid doing the following when you receive spam:

• Do NOT open any files attached with the mail. These attachments may contain computer virus or indecent materials.
• Do NOT click on any links or pictures in the mail . This includes the "Click Here to Unsubscribe" and "Remove me" links, because spammers may use these links to verify that your email address is valid.
• Do NOT reply, because:
  Very often the sender and return addresses of the spam mail are fake.
  The spammers will know that your email address is valid and active if they receive any email from you.
• Do NOT forward the spam to your friends and acquaintances.
• NEVER buy/enquire any products/services from spammers. 

You can do the following:

• You can simply delete the spam messages.
• You can make use of the server-side Junk Mail Filtering services provided by CSC to filter spam automatically. Please refer to here for the related FAQs.
• You can set up client-side mail filters in your email client to remove the spam automatically. Please refer to here for details.

Reporting Spam to CSC

If you like, you can report the spam email to the Computing Service Centre (CSC). You can forward the concerned spam email with FULL MAIL HEADERS (Full mail headers will have detailed information of the message, including IP addresses involved, time sent and the sources of the email. Please refer to here for the details of getting the full mail headers for different email tools) to the email address spamrpt@cityu.edu.hk. We will then analyze your email and decide whether it is spam email and whether any follow-up action is necessary.
