What are the security concerns in using Outlook Express?
Outlook Express is an integrated component of the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) and the Windows operating system. Therefore, you should perform Windows Update as frequently as possible in order to obtain and install latest security patches from Microsoft. Please refer here for the procedure of doing Windows Update. When doing the Windows Update you should ensure that all Critical Updates and Service Packs have been installed completely. Moreover, you should aware that the update process may require you to restart your computer in last step.
Nowadays many computer viruses come with email containing scripts (computer program codes) which, if activating, will infect your machine as well as using your address book to propagate the virus itself. In order to prevent your computer from getting infected by computer virus via email, you should tighten the security configuration in Outlook Express to prohibit scripts from running within email. Please click here for the details.
As good email user practice, DON'T open any email attachment from unknown or unexpected sources. Moreover, you should install an anti-virus software and keep it up-to-update to ensure that your machine is properly protected even when an attached file from trustworthy source is opened. If the attached file is found to contain virus, you should DELETE it immediately and inform the sender as soon as possible.
