How to configure Outlook Express 6 to access my POP3 Mailbox ?

If you have installed Outlook Express 6, you can configure the software to access your email by the following steps: 1

1.  On Tools menu, click Accounts.

           

 

 

2.  Select the Mail tab, click Add, and then click Mail.

           
              

 

3.   In the Display name text box, type your name (e.g. Tom Chan), and then click Next.
              
           

 

4.   In the E-mail address text box, type your email address
      <electronic-id>@cityu.edu.hk (e.g. cctom@.cityu.edu.hk), and then click Next.

 

 

 

5.   In the list of Internet mail server types, select POP3.
6.   In the Incoming mail server text box, type the name of the POP3 server i.e., mail.cityu.edu.hk
7.   In the Outgoing mail server text box, type the name of the SMTP server i.e., smtp.cityu.edu.hk.
8.   Click Next.

          

 

 

9.   In the Internet Mail Logon dialog box, enter your-electronic-id (e.g. cctom) as Account name, then click Next.

            

10.   Click Finish.

 

In addition, you should enable "secure connection" and "Leave a copy of messages on server"  checkboxes for your POP3 mail account.
11.  On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

            
 

 

12.   To select the Mail tab, click the e-mail account.
13    Click Properties.

           
 


14.  Click the Advanced tab,
15.  Check the checkbox of This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The Sever Port Numbers for Incoming mail (POP3) will be automatically changed to 995.
16.  And select option Leave a copy of messages on server, Remove from server after 30 day(s) 
       (You can set the days less or greater than "30"), and Remove from server when deleted from 'Deleted Items'.

.  Click OK.

             




Caution: In order to prevent your computer from getting infected by computer virus via email, you should tighten the security configuration in Outlook Express to prohibit scripts from running within email. Please refer here for the detailed procedure.
